The 1st Bearsden Boys Brigade has been present in the Bearsden community for 111 years and has maintained a visible presence throughout that period. Our strength in Bearsden is continuing to steadily grow.

Churches

The 1st Bearsden is connected with six churches in Bearsden: All Saints Episcopal Church, Baljaffray Parish Church, Bearsden Baptist Church, Bearsden Cross Church, Castlehill Baptist Church and New Kilpatrick Church.

We lend our support to the local Churches in whatever way we can and have strong links with each one, parading to every Church in turn. The close ties the Company has with the local Churches helps the 1st Bearsden continue its presence across the community.

Supporting Charities

Although the 1st Bearsden is a registered charity itself, this does not stop us supporting other worthwhile causes. Every year the entire company (Anchors, Junior Section and Company Section) raises funds for numerous other charities. Charities we have supported recently include the Help for Heroes, The Mission House and Red Nose Day. The 1st Bearsden also sponsors a boy in India and sends monthly donations to assist him and his family.

In the past the Junior Section have organised a shoe box appeal in order for aid to be sent to the needy while the Seniors sponsor a charity each year and raise money for it by hosting a Burns Supper.

Remembrance Day

The 1st Bearsden is proud to act as Guard of Honour at the Remembrance Sunday service at Bearsden Cross each year. Boys from the Company Section guard representatives from different community groups as they lay wreaths at the Bearsden war memorial. The 1st Bearsden also lays a wreath of its own to pay respects to those that have fallen in war. 32 ex-members of the Company gave their lives in the 1st World War and a further 18 fell in the 2nd World War.

The pipe band and bugle band are also involved in the ceremony, with the pipe band leading everyone to and from the war memorial and the buglers playing the Last Post to mark the two minute silence.

Pipe and Bugle Bands

The Pipe and Bugle band regularly attend and play in community events. The pipe band has played at various Church fund-raising and charity events and for the past few years has performed at the community fair held at Westerton Public Library.

Both bands are an integral part to the many parades the Company has each year, as well as the annual Battalion Parade.

Tidy-up Campaigns

The Company has now twice performed a thorough clean-up of the Glebe Car Park and the Manse Burn that run adjacent to the 1st Bearsden BB Hall. Boys and Officers donned their rubber wellies and rolled up their sleeves to collect countless bags of rubbish that had built up over time. On both occasions we were joined by local councillors who joined us and helped us remove the litter.

Although it might have been hard work, the result of everyone's efforts was there for all to see.
